Employment history and reference checks FAQs

Please see below for a common question on employment history and reference checks.

What if a young person has no previous employment history/this is their first job application?

Where there are gaps in employment or training history, employers will need to seek appropriate assurances from the applicant and, where in any doubt, should obtain suitable character/personal references. Character/personal references can be a good way of building up a picture of an individual’s reliability, integrity, life/social skills and experiences.

Character and personal references may be sought from professional acquaintances not related to the individual, and who do not hold any financial arrangements with that individual. Further guidance can be found on page 8 of the ‘Employment history and reference checks’ standard.
