In May 2015, Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust (LTHT) started to run apprenticeship programmes in partnership with learndirect. The trust recognised that apprentices could benefit from two levels of mentoring support:
- peer mentors
- learning mentors (to support managers and the young people).
The peer mentor is usually a band two member of staff who works alongside the apprentice on a daily basis, offering ongoing training and support together with hands on experience of the job.
The learning mentor offers support to both the apprentice and their manager, and communicates with both parties on a regular basis to ensure that the apprenticeship is running smoothly.
The initiative has allowed staff to build better relationships with their managers, and apprentices are well received across departments. Managers are now pro-actively approaching learning mentors to ask to have an apprentice.
